PARIS – Emma Hayes, the U.S. women’s national team coach, has quickly won over her players with her coaching skills and her sense of humor.

After the U.S. team’s 3-0 victory over Zambia, Hayes made light of her disappointment, comparing the game to a National Women’s Soccer League match. Her candid nature even led her to joke about wanting a drink when asked about her preference for the next opponent after beating Germany.
Hayes’ humor extends beyond the pitch. When asked about her 6-year-old son before the Brazil match, she quipped that Harry spends his time either with the team or at the Lego Store.
But Hayes is not just about jokes. She’s a proven winner, having led Chelsea to seven Women’s Super League titles. With the USWNT, she is both demanding and supportive, pushing her players to “suffer” on the field while also reminding them to enjoy the game.
Hayes’ ability to mix seriousness with humor has built strong trust within the team. Lindsey Horan, the team captain, shared that the team even breaks out a karaoke machine during lighter moments, with Hayes’ go-to song being “Ice Ice Baby.”
