AAP Leaders Celebrate as Manish Sisodia Granted Bail After 17 Months

Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) celebrated on Friday after the Supreme Court granted bail to their party leader and Delhi’s former deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia. Sisodia, who had been in jail for 17 months in connection with the excise policy case, is now set to be released.

At the AAP headquarters, party leaders distributed laddoos while supporters danced to the beats of Dhol Nagadas following the court’s decision. The case had been filed against Sisodia by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over the alleged excise policy scam.

Raghav Chaddha, AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP, expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court on social media platform X, while Delhi’s Education Minister Atishi posted “Satyamev Jayate” (the truth always wins). Chaddha stated, “The entire nation is rejoicing today as Manish Sisodia ji, the driving force behind Delhi’s education revolution, has been granted bail. I express my gratitude to the honorable Supreme Court. Manish Ji was imprisoned for 530 days, and his only ‘crime’ was providing a brighter future for underprivileged children. Dear children, your Manish uncle is coming back.”

Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, remarked, “There is delay in God’s house, but no injustice.” Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also called Sisodia’s bail a victory of truth.

Swati Maliwal, Rajya Sabha MP and former Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, who has been at odds with the party recently, congratulated Manish Sisodia and expressed her hope that he would now steer the government in the right direction. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi described it as the moment of greatest happiness and an emotional occasion as “our family’s leader will be stepping out” after 17 months. Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated that the Supreme Court’s decision set a precedent for the judicial system across the country, criticizing the central government for allegedly conspiring to imprison its opponents and prolong the trial. He emphasized that the court’s comments today would serve as a lesson for all courts, adding, “The agencies have not even started the trial in this case. The court’s decision to grant bail to Manish Sisodia ji has set a precedent for similar cases moving forward.”
