Baltimore bridge collapse: Indian crew to stay onboard till probe is over

The crew of the container ship Dali, which is Indian and Sri Lankan, will stay on board until the accident investigation is finished. The ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing the 2.6-kilometer-long, four-lane bridge to collapse. Twenty Indians and one Sri Lankan crew member operated Dali; they are reportedly “busy with normal duties” at the moment.

On March 26, a 984-foot cargo ship that was headed for Colombo collided with the Patapsco River bridge. Reports from US media outlets state that the ship experienced a complete blackout shortly before the collision, meaning that its engine and electricity were lost.

The number of passengers on board has been confirmed by a representative for Grace Ocean Pte and Synergy Marine, the companies that own and operate the ship. “The number of crew members on board is confirmed to be 21. In addition to helping the Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board investigators on board, the crew members are occupied with their regular responsibilities on the ship, the spokesperson stated.

The spokesperson said that the crew will stay on board until the investigation is finished, but they are unsure how long it will take. The crew of Dali was described as “healthy” by the nonprofit organization Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center in an earlier statement.

Furthermore, the Indian embassy in Washington was in close communication with the crew and the local authorities, as previously stated by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Last week, US authorities started interrogating the Dali crew. As part of their investigation, the officials gathered documents, voyage data recorder extracts, and other evidence on Wednesday of last week.

After reporting a minor injury, one crew member received treatment and was released from the hospital.

However, following the collision on a bridge, six members of a construction crew are thought to be dead. When the accident happened, the crew was working on fixing potholes on the bridge. Two bodies have been recovered by divers from a red pickup truck that was discovered floating in a river. There is still a search underway for the four victims who are still missing.

US President Joe Biden affirmed that before the tragic collision, transportation authorities could close the Baltimore bridge because the crew on board the vessel Dali had sent out an alert regarding a potential loss of control. According to Biden, this action “undoubtedly” saved lives.
