Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina decides to hold elections

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh when the new caretaker government decides to hold elections, according to her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Hasina left for India after violent protests forced her to quit her job A caretaker government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in to oversee the upcoming elections. Hasina’s Awami League party is not part of this interim government, following a student-led uprising that resulted in around 300 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Currently, Hasina is staying in a safe house near New Delhi. Although there are reports that she may seek asylum in Britain, the British Home Office has not commented. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned discussing Bangladesh with his British counterpart but provided no further details. Joy, who is based in the US, stated that he might enter politics if necessary and expressed confidence that the Awami League would participate in and possibly win the upcoming election.
