Breakdancing, officially known as Breaking, is set to make its Olympic debut today at 4 PM, starting with the B-Girls Pre-Qualifier Battle at Parc Urbain. This marks a significant moment in the Paris Olympics 2024, as Breaking joins the lineup of traditional and modern sports, challenging stereotypes and making history as the first time the dance style is featured in the Games.
While the term “breakdancing” is more widely recognized, the original B-Boys and B-Girls chose “Breaking” to better capture the essence of the dance, which originated during the breaks in DJ tracks. The Olympics has adopted this term to honor the culture and history of the dance, ensuring its authenticity remains intact.
Breaking emerged in New York during the 1970s, evolving as a dance style at block parties. By the 1980s, it had gained mainstream popularity, thanks to influential groups like the Rock Steady Crew and the New York City Breakers, who pioneered many of the moves that will be showcased on the global stage over the next two days. Though Breaking has its roots in New York, this two-day competition features competitors from over ten countries, including China, India, Ukraine, Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea, demonstrating that it’s truly an international sport.

Breaking is a dynamic dance style that includes both standing footwork, known as top rock, and floor movements, known as down rock.
The dance also showcases stunning tricks, such as power moves involving twists and spins, along with freezes like the well-known ‘baby freeze,’ where dancers strike poses using their heads or hands for support. Don’t miss the excitement at La Concorde tomorrow!
Notably, the longest-running Breaking competition in the world, the Battle of the Year, has taken place annually since 1990 in Germany, originally known as the International Breakdance Cup. The World DanceSport Federation, which oversees Breaking, was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1997.
