China Calls for Vigilance in Asia-Pacific Amid US Plans for Tinian Airfield

China’s Defense Ministry has issued a strong caution to the Asia-Pacific Region. They’re concerned about the increased military presence by the US in the area and the revival plans for a Pacific airfield previously used for atomic bomb launches towards Japan. In response, Beijing emphasized its military’s close monitoring of the United States’ actions.

The Chinese Defense Ministry’s spokesperson emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime rights, security, and sovereignty in the region. They criticized the US motives, citing self-interest and a desire to maintain dominance. The US Air Force has confirmed plans to reconstruct the Tinian Island airfield, previously used for launching nuclear attacks during World War II. Tinian, part of the Northern Mariana Islands and a US territory, has seen substantial progress in clearing the forest that grew after its abandonment in 1946. The US aims to allocate significant funds from the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act for this ambitious conversion project into a comprehensive facility.

The senior US Pacific services official previously mentioned that this measure aims to expand available options in case of potential conflicts with China. Emphasizing the necessity for multiple operational sites in the Pacific during a conflict, they underscored the importance of having varied locations for launching and landing aircraft. This development highlights escalating military tensions between the US and China, despite ongoing diplomatic endeavors in recent months.
