EU’s stance against Iran’s attack on Israel

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a statement on X, strongly condemned Iran’s “gross and unjustified” attack on Israel. He called on Iran and its proxies to immediately stop these attacks and stressed the importance of restoring regional stability.

Following a suspected Israeli attack on an Iranian consular building in Syria earlier this month, Tehran launched nearly 300 drones, ballistic, and cruise missiles against Israel over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of 12 people, including two senior Iranian generals. EU Parliament President Roberta Metzola described Iran’s attack as a “major escalation” and reiterated the EU’s commitment to de-escalate the situation to prevent further bloodshed.

G7 leaders are due to meet via video call on Sunday to discuss their response to the attack, the first time Iran has directly attacked its arch-regional rival.

Julian Barnes-Dacey, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said that although Iran’s response was tense, it was intended to avoid provoking a wider conflict. However, the nature of the attacks may reinforce Israel’s perception that Tehran lacks the capacity for deeper engagement.

Even EU member states, usually critical of Brussels, joined in condemning Tehran’s actions. Hungary’s far-right leader Viktor Orban expressed solidarity, saying he would “pray for the safety of the Israeli people.”
