Fog in Melbourne may cause travel delays

Commuters traveling by road and air in Melbourne are being warned of potential delays as fog blankets the city. Yep, that’s Melbourne. This is a live shot of the CPD, that thick blanket layering the city. And it comes as at least one person fights for life, with 21 others also injured after multiple crashes on a Victorian freeway.

I can tell you that that person, that man, is still fighting for life here at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Another patient from that freeway incident is currently listed as being in a serious condition. All up 22 people were injured as a result of this 30 cars involved on the Western freeway during peak hour yesterday. Police say it is all due to fog. The drivers not adhering to the conditions. This morning, as that fog continues to blanket our city motorists are being urged to drive with extreme caution. There are warnings for people heading to the airport as well.

I can tell you already, 20 outbound flights have been canceled. Eight inbound flights have been canceled. Not all due to weather, but it is already causing delays of up to an hour. I’ve just spoken with the airport. There is the potential if this fog hangs around for the next couple of hours that there will be more cancelations and more delays, and that will certainly potentially cascade. Yesterday, due to that heavy fog, we saw many cancelations. In fact, all up, 105 domestic flights were canceled at Melbourne Airport yesterday. That is 15% of the schedule, so an incredibly large amount. Of course, be cautious and keep an eye out for any potential delays if you’re traveling to the airport this morning and are on the roads.
