Former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh Dies at 95; PM Modi Expresses Grief

Former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh passed away on Saturday at the age of 95 after a prolonged illness. He was receiving treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala confirmed Singh’s passing, stating, “The news of the demise of former Foreign Minister Natwar Singh ji is sad.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on X, saying, “Pained by the passing away of Shri Natwar Singh Ji. He made rich contributions to the world of diplomacy and foreign policy. He will be deeply missed for his intellect and writing. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Born in 1931 in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, Natwar Singh was a career diplomat before entering politics. He brought extensive diplomatic experience to his political roles and was a prolific author, writing on various topics, including the life of a maharaja and the intricacies of foreign affairs.

Throughout his distinguished career, Singh held several important positions and was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1984 for his service to the nation. As a former Congress MP, he served as India’s External Affairs Minister from 2004 to 2005 during the UPA-I government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He also served as India’s ambassador to Pakistan and worked in Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s office from 1966 to 1971.

Singh was also an accomplished author, with notable works like The Legacy of Nehru: A Memorial Tribute and My China Diary 1956-88. His autobiography, One Life Is Not Enough, offers a detailed account of his life and career.
