India Faces Surge in JN1 COVID Sub-Variant: Goa Leads, Kerala and Maharashtra on Alert

The new JN1 COVID sub-variant is spreading in India, with Goa seeing the highest number of cases. Across the country, 2,669 active COVID cases were reported in the last 24 hours, 19 of them in Goa. No fresh cases have emerged in the state in the past day, but authorities advise against panic and urge everyone to take preventive measures.

Kerala and Maharashtra also note a rise in JN1 sub-variant cases, while overall COVID cases surge in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Kerala reported 300 new COVID-19 cases, crossing 2,000 active cases, followed by Karnataka with 13 and Tamil Nadu with 12 new cases.

Additionally, six COVID deaths were reported in the last day—three in Kerala, two in Karnataka, and one in Punjab. To tackle the sub-variant, the Health Ministry is collaborating with the Indian Council of Medical Research for sequencing. Experts emphasize reinforcing testing and surveillance protocols at the state level.
