India clinched not just a victory but a resounding one against South Africa in the three-match ODI series. After bundling out South Africa for a mere 116 runs in the ODI, the Indian team swiftly chased down this modest target. Even before completing 20 overs, India reached the 116-run mark, taking a decisive 1-0 lead in the series. It was an entirely one-sided affair, with South Africa being all out at 116 runs. They lasted only 27.3 overs, and following that, the Indian batsmen left little room for celebration.
Credit must be given to the South African bowlers. Special mention to Shreyas Iyer, and prior to him, commendations for Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan, who disrupted the rhythm of the African batsmen. Now, focusing on the match, South Africa batted first but failed to create a substantial score. They were dismissed for 116 runs in 27.3 overs. Arshdeep Singh scalped five wickets for India, continuing his commendable performance from the previous T20 by taking five wickets conceding only 37 runs in 10 overs.
His aggressive approach from the outset caused a stir among the African batsmen. Whether discussing the top or middle order, they were unable to stand against the African batters. Then came Avesh Khan, who also showcased brilliant bowling. He claimed four wickets, conceding 27 runs in eight overs and delivering three maidens. Thanks to Arshdeep’s five and Avesh’s four, India dismissed South Africa for 116 runs. Kuldeep Yadav was tasked with making 117 runs. Achieving 117 runs isn’t overly challenging, yet Ruturaj Gaikwad, despite being overlooked in the T20 series, didn’t make a significant impact in the ODIs.
He managed just five runs in 10 balls, raising doubts about India’s prospects. However, Sai Sudharsan, partnered with Iyer, secured a remarkable victory for the Indian team. In his debut match, Sudharsan displayed an attacking style, notching eight boundaries and achieving a strike rate over 120. Shreyas Iyer, who missed out on the T20 series, displayed exemplary form during the World Cup and continued that trend. He amassed 52 runs off 45 balls, striking six boundaries and a six, boasting a strike rate exceeding 115. His innings was exceptional.
Sudharsan played cautiously, contributing significantly. Both batsmen deserve applause, initiating the tour against South Africa with a loss, then claiming victory in the T20s, and now, commencing the ODI series with a commanding win. Once you dismiss the opposition for 116, there’s little else left to do. However, I’ll assert that the pitch posed considerable challenges, but despite South Africa’s skilled bowlers, the Indian team comfortably secured a win. Rahul, Sanju Samson, Akshar Patel, among others, remained untested. Nevertheless, the top-order batsmen paved the way, leading India to a 1-0 series lead.
