India has strongly dismissed the concerns expressed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation regarding the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the revocation of Article 370 of the constitution. This decision was made in 2019, which eliminated the legal provisions granting special status and autonomy to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Recently, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation urged India to reverse its measures taken in 2019 concerning Kashmir, labeling them as illegal and unilateral. In response, the Indian Foreign Ministry criticized the OIC’s statement as ill-informed and ill-intended.
Without directly naming any specific nation, a spokesperson from the ministry condemned actions instigated by a habitual violator of human rights and a relentless promoter of cross-border terrorism.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation was established in 1971, following meetings of Muslim heads of state and government in 1969 and foreign ministers in 1970, with 57 member states spread across four continents.
In a significant ruling, the Indian Supreme Court, through a constitution bench, unanimously affirmed the Union government’s decision of August 2019. Chief Justice Deyay Chandrashoor emphasized that Article 370 of the constitution was a temporary provision. The judges noted that Jamu and Kashmir lacked internal sovereignty post-accession and highlighted the absence of any reference to sovereignty in the Jammu and Kashmir constitution.
