Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hussein Amir Abdullahian, stated that Iran has conducted a strike against a terrorist organization within Pakistan’s Balochistan region. He clarified that no Pakistani civilians were targeted, and the attack was solely directed at Jaish al Adl’s locations. Abdullahian mentioned that Iran had engaged in discussions with several Pakistani officials, addressing the actions taken in response to operations conducted by these terrorists against Iran.
The Minister assured Pakistan’s Foreign Minister of respecting their sovereignty and regional integrity but emphasized that Iran cannot compromise on its national security. The strikes were specific to Iranian terrorists operating in Pakistani territory. Iran perceives its actions as essential for its security vis-a-vis Iraq and Pakistan. However, the strikes on Jaish al Adl’s bases in Balochistan have created tensions between Iran and Pakistan, leading to the recall of their respective diplomats. The incident has strained diplomatic relations and prompted Pakistan to take immediate measures, including the suspension of several high-profile exchanges.
Who is Jaish al-Adl and why did Iran attack it?
Jaish al Adl, a Sunni terrorist organization established in 2012, operates on a large scale within Pakistan, particularly in the Sistan Baluchistan region. This active terrorist group along the Iran-Pakistan border has been a source of concern for both governments. The United States and Iran have labeled Jaish al Adl as a terrorist organization. With an estimated 500 to 600 militants, it has been accused of carrying out various attacks, leading to tensions between Iran and Pakistan.
Last month, a significant attack on a police station in Sistan Baluchistan resulted in the death of at least 11 Iranian police officers. Iran attributed this incident to Jaish al Adl. According to the Director of National Intelligence in the United States, the organization has been consistently involved in attacks on Iranian security forces since 2013, engaging in activities like assassinations, kidnappings, hit-and-run operations, and raids. The group gained international attention in 2013 when it killed 14 Iranian security personnel. The recent large-scale strike by Iran on Jaish al Adl signifies a robust response to the group’s history of violence and attacks on Iranian forces.
