Japan Earthquake: 7.1 Magnitude Quake Hits Miyazaki, Tsunami Warning Issued

Japan Earthquake Today Latest News: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck Japan’s southern Miyazaki Prefecture on Thursday. The tremor, which was centered in the Hyuga-Nada Sea, was followed by an even stronger aftershock of 7.1 magnitude, occurring 20 km northeast of Nichinan city at a depth of 25 km. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter of the initial quake in the sea at a depth of 30 km.

Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued, with waves up to 1 meter expected in the affected regions. Residents near coastal areas, rivers, and lakes have been urged to evacuate to safer locations immediately.

Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, reported that the tsunami warning extends beyond Miyazaki to include Kochi, Ehime, Kagoshima, and Oita prefectures.

In response to the quake, the Kyushu Electric Power Company confirmed that there are no issues at the Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture. Similarly, the Shikoku Electric Power Company reported that the Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture is operating normally, with no changes in radiation levels, according to NHK.
