One of Sandalwood’s biggest blockbusters, Kantara, received well-deserved recognition at the National Awards announced on Friday. The film achieved two major milestones, winning awards for Best Actor and Best Entertaining Film at the prestigious ceremony.
Released in 2022, Kantara captivated audiences with its gripping storyline and deep connection to religious beliefs and folklore. The film, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, earned widespread acclaim, with Shetty’s intense performance making him a worthy winner at the National Film Awards.
Kantara explores a conflict between humans and nature, with Rishab Shetty portraying Shiva, as a rebel working against nature. The film was shot in Keradi, coastal Karnataka, to maintain authenticity in its portrayal of local cultures, such as Kambla and Bhootha Kola. The film’s success at the box office was staggering, grossing over Rs 450 crore and surpassing many films featuring top-tier stars from various industries.

Due to the overwhelming response to Kantara, Rishab Shetty announced a sequel, which will be a prequel to the original film. In 2023, Shetty revealed that the Kantara released in 2022 was part two, and the upcoming film will be titled Kantara Chapter 1. He shared in a media interaction, “We are very pleased and thankful to the audience for the immense love and support for Kantara. With the blessing of almighty Daiva, the film has completed 100 days, and I would like to announce the prequel to Kantara. What you’ve seen is actually the second part; the first part will be released next year.”
