Kolkata doctor rape and Murder: Mob Attack on RG Kar Medical College Leaves Behind a Trail of Destruction

Kolkata doctor rape and Murder: The ground floor of the emergency building at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was the scene of horrific violence late Wednesday night. A mob of 40-50 miscreants allegedly stormed the premises, leaving behind damaged medical equipment, destroyed lifesaving drugs, broken beds, shattered glass, and terror among the hospital staff.

The chaos was so intense that even the police officers stationed at the hospital to monitor protests under the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign—following the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor—had to seek refuge with the hospital staff. A nurse recounted how two officers begged to be hidden in the ward for safety.

Armed with sticks, bricks, and rods, the mob vandalized the Emergency ward, nursing station, and medicine store. They reportedly attempted to break into the seminar room where the crime against the doctor allegedly occurred but were unable to access it. The attackers mistakenly believed the crime took place on the second floor, which they also vandalized.

Despite the chaos, the Kolkata police clarified in a post on ‘X’ that the crime scene—the seminar room—remained untouched, urging people not to spread unverified news and warning of legal action for spreading rumors.

The terror inflicted by the mob was palpable among the hospital staff. Nurses and doctors were left in tears, fearing for their lives. One nurse expressed her fear of being killed, while others described the attack as a horrific experience.

The following morning, the hospital’s nurses protested the vandalism, demanding proper security measures. “Such hooliganism inside a hospital is unacceptable,” said one of the protesting nurses.

Doctors also expressed their anger and determination to continue protesting. One doctor, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The goons entered the campus and beat up agitating doctors. This was an attempt to break our morale, but it has only strengthened our resolve to fight till the end.”

According to reports, police fired tear gas to disperse the mob, which had also damaged a police vehicle and several motorcycles. Some officers were injured in the chaos.
