Latin American countries such as Brazil supported Mexico after its embassy in Ecuador was raided to arrest a politician granted asylum by Mexico.
The arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas led Mexico to suspend relations with Ecuador. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called it an “authoritarian” act and against international law.
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa argued that asylum was illegal due to corruption allegations against Glass. However, under international law, embassies are considered the territory of a country.

Several Latin American governments criticized Glas’ arrest. Brazil said it violated international norms. The US condemned any violations of diplomatic mission conventions and encouraged Ecuador and Mexico to resolve differences by international norms.

Glass, twice convicted of corruption, had been in the Quito embassy since seeking asylum in December, which Mexico approved on Friday. Ecuadorian officials first tried to enter the embassy but failed.
Glass, once a deputy to former President Rafael Correa, was convicted of accepting bribes from Odebrecht. He claims political persecution, which Ecuador denies.
