Maldives Suggests President’s Visit Amid Comments Controversy

The Maldives is in the spotlight due to three of its ministers making disrespectful remarks about the Indian Prime Minister, sparking a diplomatic uproar. In efforts to ease tensions, Maldives proposed a presidential visit to India later this month, especially following the president’s recent trip to China. This situation arose after New Delhi expressed its displeasure over derogatory comments targeting the Indian Prime Minister. The issue began when Mohamed Muizzu takes office in the Maldives last October, signaling a shift towards closer ties with China, and a departure from the country’s previous connections with New Delhi.

Maldives Ministers Remarks Spark Suspension

Breaking from tradition, the Maldives president initiated his foreign visits by skipping New Delhi, opting instead for Turkey. Currently undertaking a state visit to China, he is set to meet Xi Jinping, with several bilateral agreements between Beijing and the Maldives anticipated to be signed. However, domestically, Muizzu is grappling with dousing a diplomatic uproar sparked by inappropriate remarks from his ministers. The three deputy ministers, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdullah Mahzoom Majid, all affiliated with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, faced disciplinary action for their unwarranted comments on social media and have been suspended.

China Clarifies Diplomatic Dispute

China is making efforts to distance itself from the controversy. Beijing clarified that it never urged the Maldives to distance itself from New Delhi due to their differences, nor does it perceive the collaboration between the Maldives and India as hostile or menacing.

Outrage Over Ministers’ Derogatory Remarks

The comments made by the ministers have ignited widespread outrage in India, prompting condemnation from various Indian celebrities and political figures for their offensive nature. On the other hand, Maldives MP Mikhail Naseem has urged parliament to summon the Maldives foreign minister to address the lack of action and urgency in response to this incident. Despite this, the Maldives minister reaffirmed his previous statement.

What did they say

He say We’ve waited for the government to respond and apologize officially, but that hasn’t happened. It’s time for parliament to step in and ask why there’s been a lack of serious action. The government needs to address this and put an end to this diplomatic dispute caused by social media voices and senior officials from the ruling party.
