O.J. Simpson, acquitted murder defendant and football star, dies at age 76

Orenthal O.J., also known as James Simpson, was a well-known football player. At seventy-six, he had been battling cancer. According to a post from Simpson’s family on X, he passed away on Wednesday with his family by his side.

Simpson was more than just a football player; in addition to being in commercials and films, he was a cultural icon. He made headlines in 1994, though, for a different reason:

he was charged with killing Nicole Brown Simpson, his ex-wife, and her friend Ronald Goldman. The case still has national attention even though he was found not guilty after a widely reported trial in 1995. Nobody else has ever faced charges related to the fatalities.

While playing football for the University of Southern California in the late 1960s, O.J. Simpson rose to fame. A standout running back, he was awarded the Heisman Trophy as the best college player in 1968 after helping the Trojans win the national championship in 1967.

He spent 11 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Buffalo Bills, after graduating from USC. Known by his nickname, “The Juice,” he was a four-time rushing champion, a five-time Pro Bowl participant, and the first running back to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season in 1973.

Nicole Brown Simpson was discovered stabbed outside her Los Angeles home in 1994, along with her friend Ronald Goldman. O.J. Simpson was taken into custody shortly after, and the nation watched his slow-motion car chase on L.A. freeways on television. A jury acquitted him of the murders in 1995.

The decision, which was dubbed the “trial of the century,” spurred national discussions about domestic violence, race, celebrity, and police conduct. Two years later, in a civil case, another jury found him guilty of the deaths and ordered him to reimburse the families with $33 million.

After that, there were additional legal issues. In 2007, he had a meeting with sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel. Simpson was convicted of armed robbery due to the existence of firearms. He spent nearly ten years in prison before being released from Nevada in 2017. As a result of O.J. Simpson’s ongoing fascination, several documentaries about the killings and his life have been produced.
