Parliament Security Breach: Intrusion Echoing 2001 Attack Raises Concerns

On December 13th, 2001, a day indelibly imprinted in the memory of every parliamentarian, the old Parliament of India was besieged by five terrorists. Twenty-two years later, on this solemn anniversary, a distressing breach in security unfolded within the new Parliament building. Two unidentified individuals leapt into the lower House chamber from the Visitors Gallery during the ongoing proceedings and were swiftly detained.

In the early hours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside eminent political leaders and ministers, gathered at the old Parliament building to honor the martyrs on this poignant 22nd anniversary. The attackers, affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, infiltrated the Parliament premises in a vehicular assault that claimed the lives of five Delhi police personnel, two security officers, a CRPF constable, and a gardener.

At approximately 1:00 PM, a disquieting breach occurred within the lower House, as two intruders, jumping from public gallery number four, incited a momentary frenzy. Television footage captured their progression from desk to desk, accompanied by slogans and the release of yellow-colored smoke. The intruders were promptly detained, leading to a brief adjournment of the session.

Beyond the Parliament, another incident unfolded as a man and a woman were detained for protesting with colored smoke canisters. MP Karti Chidambaram recounted, “Two individuals suddenly infiltrated the house from the visitor’s gallery, brandishing canisters emitting yellow smoke. While one attempted to approach the speaker’s chair, swift action from members subdued them.”

The intrusion on this significant day, echoing the 2001 Parliament attack, underscores critical security concerns. With motives of the intruders yet to be elucidated, their detainment remains under police custody. The Speaker has assured a thorough inquiry, emphasizing the imperative of fortifying the security of our nation’s paramount institutions.
