Baurus Nadestin, a vocal opponent of President Vladimir Putin in Russia, is set to run as the presidential candidate for the Centre-right Civic Initiative Party. The opposition party announced Nadestin’s intention to register with the Electoral Commission on December 25th. If successful, this would mark the first instance of a Putin critic competing in elections against him, notably following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In May, Nadezhdin called for electing a new government in Russia to halt the conflict with Ukraine and foster relationships with Europe. He criticizes Putin for clinging to outdated perspectives, pushing Russia back into a medieval-like feudalism. Born in Uzbekistan during the Cold War when it was known as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, Boris pursued engineering at the Moscow Physical Technical Institute. His initial political attempt in 1995 paved the way for his burgeoning political career, eventually leading to his role as the deputy chairman of the parliamentary faction of the Union of Right Forces.
Meanwhile, former TV journalist Dunsova’s bid for Russia’s presidential election has been disqualified. The Central Electoral Commission unanimously voted against her candidacy, citing numerous violations in her submitted documents. Critics view this move as evidence that individuals with opposing views to the President won’t be permitted to stand for election.
Alexei Navalny, one of Putin’s most prominent opponents, is currently serving multiple prison sentences totaling over 30 years. Concerns have been raised as his supporters are uncertain about his whereabouts, with the last reported access by lawyers on December sixth. Vladimir Putin has been the President of Russia since 2012, maintaining leadership roles as President or Prime Minister continuously since 1999, making him the longest-serving Russian or Soviet leader after Joseph Stalin. The Kremlin is confident in Putin’s victory in the upcoming election, citing his widespread support across society, reflected in opinion poll ratings of approximately 80%.
