Have been sent to hospital, and their peers bused back to school after a coach they were traveling in on the M1 was rear-ended by a truck, cutting short their end-of-year excursion to wet and wild. Tonight, 9news speaks with a teenager on board when the bus was struck. A bus full of school children from Kalemville Community College bound for the Gold Coast for a planned end-of-year excursion.
But they never made it, instead, caught up in this terrifying nose to tail. Fifteen-year-old Mikaela Anderson discharged from hospital this afternoon, onboard for that frightening moment of impact.
Mikaela Anderson :
All of a sudden, we all got flung forward, and it was just a loud bang, glass shattering and people screaming.
Report :
Police say the bus had pulled over. It was parked on the side of the M1 when this truck slammed into the back of it. Remarkably, students were able to get themselves out of the wreckage as they waited for emergency services.
Looking at the busses crumpled back, torn apart in the impact, it’s hard to believe most kids came away unscathed. Taken back to school on another bus, some picked up by their parents. Ten students taken to hospital. The driver of the truck said no one suffered life-threatening injuries. Two of the patients had facial injuries, yes. One had chest and two had lower leg injuries. The crash caused traffic chaos for anyone heading south on the M1, delays on surrounding roads too, as drivers tried to bypass the inevitable buildup. No charges have been laid, as police continue to investigate why the truck hit the back of the bus.
