Russia Blames Ukraine: 25 Dead in Belgorod Attack

Russia and Ukraine have been in conflict, exchanging deadly attacks recently. The Ukrainian military has warned of a significant potential Russian-led assault. Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to escalate attacks on Ukraine. This threat came after an attack on the Russian city of Belgorod on Saturday.

Kyiv Missile Alert

The Ukrainian Air Force shared on Telegram that several missiles were headed for Kyiv. Nationwide alerts have been issued due to concerns about potential Russian bomber threats. The Air Force suspects Moscow has launched cruise missiles from 295-MS aircraft. They also reported the sighting of at least 16 ETU-95-MS strategic bombers in the country’s airspace.

Russian Drone Attacks

On Monday, Russia deployed a high number, around 90, of Shah-type drones over Ukraine. Tragically, a New Year’s Day attack in Odessa and the Russian-occupied Donetsk resulted in at least five fatalities. Another drone strike damaged a Lviv university building, prompting emergency services to rush and contain the resulting fire. Simultaneously in Odessa, one person was killed and nine were injured in a separate Russian drone attack on the same day.

Drones Cause Fires Amidst Celebrations

The officials mentioned that the Russian drones that crashed in the area ignited fires in several homes. It’s a shocking incident, especially during our Ukrainian New Year celebrations. It’s hard to fathom who would carry out such actions, causing harm when people were gathered to celebrate. It’s a heartless act, disrupting a moment meant for joy and togetherness.

Putin Labels Ukrainian Attack

Vladimir Putin labeled the Ukrainian attack on Belgorod as terrorism and accused Ukrainian forces of intentionally targeting civilians. He stated they’d intensify strikes in response, vowing not to let crimes against civilians go unanswered.

Deadly Ukraine Strike

The Russian Defense Ministry verified that Ukraine targeted Belgorod with two missiles and multiple rockets. They mentioned that most of the weapons were intercepted, but some debris fell on the city. A Russian official stated that Saturday’s airstrike caused the deaths of at least 25 people and left over a hundred wounded. This attack is the deadliest to hit Russian soil since the start of the Ukraine invasion.
