Russia evacuated 4,000 people after dam collapse near Kazakhstan border

Russia evacuated more than 4,000 people due to flooding after a dam broke in Orenburg, near Kazakhstan.

The Orenburg governor’s office reported 4,208 evacuees, including 1,019 children. More than 2,500 houses were affected and a dam breached in the flood caused by Friday’s heavy rains.

Governor Pasler said the floods are at their peak, and Orsk, a city of 230,000, is facing difficulties

Officials said Saturday that about 2,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Orsk alone. Orsk is located in the Orenburg region of the Ural Mountains.

Authorities have warned of difficult conditions across the region and high water levels on the Ural River in Orenburg.

Video from emergency services showed people in lifeboats with life jackets. Russian news agencies reported that thousands of homes were submerged.

Russia also opened a criminal case for “negligence and violation of construction safety rules” over the breached dam built in 2014.

According to Russian news agencies, the local prosecutor’s office said the dam broke due to poor maintenance.

Many areas of the Urals and Western Siberia have been affected by flooding in early spring and parts of Kazakhstan.

President Tokayev says the floods are Kazakhstan’s biggest disaster in 80 years.
