Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visits China to talk Ukraine, Asia-Pacific

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has landed in China for discussions with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, focusing on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, bilateral relations, and regional dynamics in the Asia-Pacific, according to the Russian foreign ministry.

The talks between Lavrov and Wang will cover a range of pressing issues, including collaboration within international bodies like the United Nations and the Group of 20 (G20), as outlined by Moscow in earlier statements.

This visit precedes a planned meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for May, potentially marking Putin’s first official trip abroad since his reelection.

The relationship between Moscow and Beijing has strengthened significantly, with both nations pledging an unwavering partnership amidst global challenges. This commitment was emphasized during Putin’s visit to Beijing in February 2022, just before Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.

Facing extensive sanctions from Western nations following its actions in Ukraine, Russia has increasingly turned to China as a key economic partner, leading to a notable surge in bilateral trade.

During a recent phone call between Xi and Putin, the Chinese leader underscored the importance of rejecting external interference in domestic affairs, a veiled criticism aimed at the United States.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong highlighted the exceptional nature of the bilateral relationship during discussions with his Russian counterpart in Moscow last month, describing it as “at its peak in history,” according to statements from the Chinese foreign ministry.
