Sharmila Tagore ‘Happy’ and ‘Honoured’ as Gulmohar Wins Best Film at National Awards 2024

National Awards 2024: Sharmila Tagore expressed her happiness and honor after her 2023 movie Gulmohar won the Best Film award at the 2024 National Film Awards. Moments after the announcement, sharing her excitement and congratulating the entire Gulmohar team.

“I had just sat down for lunch when I received the news. I’m so, so happy. I immediately called Rahul, our director, and then Manoj. We’ve all stayed in touch even after the film was released. Simran, Kavita, Utsavi, Rahul, Manoj, and I formed a close-knit bond, like a family. The only person I couldn’t keep in touch with was Suraj Sharma, who lives far away,” Sharmila shared.

The veteran actress also expressed her gratitude to the National Film Awards 2024 jury and the government of India. The love and appreciation for Gulmohar we received upon its release continues to grow even today. This win proves that hard work and creating something beautiful will always be rewarded. I’m so happy for all of us. I sincerely thank the jury, who must have deliberated for hours, and the government of India,” she added.

Gulmohar marked Tagore’s return to the screen 13 years after Break Ke Baad, earning her widespread critical acclaim for her sensitive portrayal of a matriarch who is revealed to be queer. Reflecting on this, she said, “I’m even more glad to receive this award for a film I did after so many years. I wouldn’t call it a comeback. We’re all thrilled with the love we’re receiving.”

Gulmohar is a Star Studios production in association with Chalkboard Entertainment and Autonomous Works. The film’s original music was composed by Siddhartha Khosla and also stars Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth, among others. The family drama, which revolves around the multi-generational Batra family preparing to move out of their 34-year-old family home, was highly praised by fans and received positive reviews from critics.
