Support for pro-war nationalist Igor Girkin is growing ahead of the presidential elections in Russia

Russia’s 2024 presidential elections are stirring as the Russian Communist Party, the country’s second-largest party, has nominated Nikolai Pankratov  to challenge President Vladimir Putin. Krotov, no newcomer to presidential races, previously contested against Putin in 2004, securing a modest 13.7% of the votes while Putin claimed a dominant victory with over 71.3%. Despite the party’s overwhelming support for Khratov in a recent secret ballot, members were presented with a single option as his candidacy lacked any alternatives. This decision followed the exclusion of independent candidate Yekaterina Duntsova by Russia’s central election commission due to multiple violations in her submitted paperwork. Meanwhile, in Moscow, supporters of nationalist Guard Hiring, currently in custody on extremism charges for critical remarks about President Putin, rallied in support of his presidential candidacy, highlighting the unfolding political landscape in the country.

In August, Girkin grows took to social media to declare his intention to contest the upcoming presidential elections in March. He has persistently cautioned about the potential for revolution or civil unrest unless Putin’s military intensifies its efforts in the Ukraine conflict. Russia has taken strict measures against nationalist figures advocating for a more aggressive stance in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict. Holding roles as President or Prime Minister since 1999, Putin holds the record as the longest-serving Russian or Soviet leader. The Kremlin is confident in Putin’s victory in the forthcoming elections, citing widespread societal backing evidenced by opinion polls consistently favoring him with approximately 80% approval ratings.
