Taliban Executes Two in Public Stadium, Drawing International Condemnation

Saddened to learn about the execution order given in a football stadium in Ghazni city. Two men were convicted of the murder, identified as Syed Jamal of central Wardak province and Gul Khan of Ghazni. In this incident, three lower courts and Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada had ordered the execution. A total of 15 bullets were fired in these murders.

Public Appearance

Thousands of people gathered in the stadium and enjoyed watching the hanging. The incident is the third and fourth public executions since the Taliban came to power in 2021.

International Response

The United Nations has strongly criticized the Taliban because their strict interpretation of Islamic law, including “an eye for an eye” punishment, known as “kisā”, remains a matter of concern.
