Transformers One Begins Global Release with Modest Box Office Earnings

Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One kicked off its global release with a modest $39 million. The animated film, directed by Josh Cooley, marks the franchise’s first animated movie in nearly 40 years. However, it had a lukewarm start in both domestic and international markets.

The film tells the origin story of the rivalry between Optimus Prime and Megatron. It features voice performances by stars like Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Brian Tyree Henry. Despite high expectations, the movie underperformed, earning only $14 million across 50 international markets, representing just 40% of its overseas potential.

In the U.S., Transformers One brought in $25 million. It debuted behind Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which held the number one spot for the third week in a row, earning $1 million more than Transformers One.

Internationally, the movie struggled to make a big impact. In Mexico, it opened in fourth place, earning $2.2 million. Australia saw it open in third place with $1.5 million. Japan followed with $820,000, though upcoming holidays may boost its performance. Other markets showed modest results: Panama brought in $625,000, Spain earned $445,000, the Philippines $430,000, Ukraine $135,000, and Turkey $120,000. In the Philippines, Ukraine, and Turkey, the film secured the top spot.

Comparatively, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice performed much better in international markets, adding $17.2 million from 76 countries. Its total international box office now stands at $103 million. Globally, the film has made an impressive $329.7 million to date.

Despite its slow box office start, Transformers One has been well-received by critics. It holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% audience score. This positive response could help the film gain more attention in the coming weeks.

The movie’s budget is around $75 million, similar to last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Although Transformers One had a rocky beginning, the industry is hopeful that its critical acclaim will drive viewer interest and help boost its future earnings.

The future success of Transformers One depends on its performance in markets yet to open and whether it can maintain interest among audiences.
