Turkish Air Strikes in Northern Iraq and Syria Following Galling Loss of 12 Soldiers

The Turkish Air Force conducted targeted airstrikes in reaction to a recent tragic incident in which 12 Turkish troops were killed in fighting with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. According to reports, these attacks targeted 29 sites in Northern Iraq and Syria that are purportedly connected to the PKK.

The airstrikes followed an escalation in tensions after the loss of Turkish soldiers in recent clashes. The Turkish military intensified its operations, eliminating at least 16 PKK militants on Saturday and seven more on Friday.

According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, the strikes occurred at 10:00 PM local time in Northern Iraq and Syria, targeting bases, shelters, and suspected oil facilities utilized by PKK militants. However, specific details about the affected regions have not been disclosed at this time.

The PKK has been labeled a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the European Union since its emergence in 1984 when it initiated armed resistance against the Turkish state. Turkey has consistently conducted airstrikes in neighboring Iraq as part of its efforts to combat PKK militants based in the region.
