US Accuses Iran of Ship Attacks: Escalating Tensions in the Red Sea

Washington has recently declassified intelligence pointing fingers at Iran for its alleged involvement in attacks on commercial ships by Yemen’s Huthi rebels. The US is now contemplating stricter actions, potentially even the use of force, to counter these assaults. Despite the accusations, Iran has consistently denied any role in these incidents.

In response to the escalating situation, the US announced the formation of a naval coalition consisting of 20 nations aimed at protecting vessels in the Red Sea from such attacks. Participating countries have expressed intentions to integrate these protective operations into existing naval agreements. In a display of strength, President Joe Biden revealed that the USS Dwight Eisenhower, a US aircraft carrier, had entered the Gulf of Aden.

The White House alleges that Iran’s clerical regime has supplied drones, missiles, and tactical intelligence to the Huthis, contributing significantly to their capabilities. A spokesperson from the US National Security Council emphasized Iran’s deep involvement in orchestrating the attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. This assertion was reiterated by John Kirby, another spokesperson from the National Security Council.

According to reports from the Pentagon, the Huthis, who hold significant territory in Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, have carried out numerous drone and missile strikes targeting around 10 merchant vessels. The White House claims that the Huthis rely on Iranian-provided surveillance systems at sea.

The Biden administration is increasingly worried that the Huthis aim to disrupt global maritime trade, potentially impacting trade with Israel and raising the costs for the US and its allies supporting Israel. The Yemeni insurgents’ persistent attacks on ships are seen as a display of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Meanwhile, the Huthis have issued warnings that they would retaliate against US warships if Washington targeted the Iranian-backed militia.
