Days after the Indian Men's cricket team won the T20 World Cup 2024 and Virat Kohli was named 'Player of the Match,' Sanjay Manjrekar questioned this choice.
On an ESPNCricinfo post-match show, the former cricketer said Kohli's 76 runs off 59 balls could have put India in "a tight corner."
He believed an Indian bowler deserved the award, noting that Kohli's innings limited Hardik Pandya to just two balls.
Manjrekar remarked, "India's batting was good, but Kohli's innings could've put India in a tight spot." He added that the bowlers ultimately saved the game.
"My Player of the Match would've been a bowler because they turned the game around and won it for India," Manjrekar said.
However, Zimbabwe's Andy Flower disagreed, arguing that 176 was a solid total and suggested Kohli would have faced criticism if India had lost.
On Saturday in Barbados, India defeated South Africa in a thrilling final to win their first ICC trophy since the 2011 ODI World Cup and their first T20 World Cup since 2007.
