WhatsApp went down yesterday afternoon, leaving users unable to send any messages on the Meta-owned service. WhatsApp users complained that a timer was appearing on their messages, leading to failure in sending texts.
The WhatsApp issue follows the outage of other meta-services Facebook and Instagram that occurred in March.
WhatsApp down happened and why?
Just after 2 pm EST, WhatsApp users started reporting problems connecting to the service. While reporting a large number of problems on Down Detector – which shows a spike around that time – users said their WiFi was working properly, indicating that the problem was WhatsApp itself.

Facebook and Instagram users also reported problems viewing and creating posts.
WhatsApp owner Meta confirmed the issue via a status page for its Business API, saying the outage also affects APIs that connect to Facebook Messenger and Instagram. This indicates that the outage was not caused by a hack.
Meta-owned WhatsApp and Instagram, which were down for many users around the world at 11.45 pm IST on Wednesday, have been restored. Users attempting to log in to the app or WhatsApp Web – the browser version – faced an error message stating that the service is currently unavailable.
