The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the first diagnostic test for Mpox (previously known as monkeypox) for emergency use. This Alinity m MPXV assay test is designed to detect Mpox DNA from skin lesion samples using real-time PCR technology. This approval aims to improve the testing capacity in countries facing Mpox outbreaks, enabling faster detection and treatment of the virus.
This new test is part of WHO’s efforts to address the growing need for accurate and timely testing in regions where the virus is spreading rapidly, especially in Africa, where testing capacity has been limited. Early diagnosis is crucial for managing the spread of the disease, which has affected over 30,000 people this year in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Nigeria.
