China and Russia’s $200 Billion Trade Milestone: Strengthening Strategic Ties

China’s President, Xi Jinping, recently reaffirmed China’s strong bond with Moscow, emphasizing that maintaining a close relationship with Russia is a strategic priority for China. During his meeting with Russia’s Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin President Xi urged for deeper cooperation, viewing their collaboration as a key model for global stability among major powers. Their shared goal is not only to strengthen economic ties but also to foster cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Prime Minister Mishustin praised the historical strength of the Russia-China relationship, highlighting its role in stabilizing international affairs. The visit of the Russian Prime Minister is part of the 28th regular meeting between the leaders of Russia and China. President Xi and President Putin acknowledged the successful and steady cooperation between their nations, underscoring that they’ve surpassed the $200 billion trade target set in 2019.

From January to November, the total trade between the two countries stood at about $218 billion, marking a significant rise from $100 billion in 2018. Amid Western sanctions imposed due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, China has notably increased exports to Russia by nearly 50% this year.

Meanwhile, imports from Russia have seen a 12% rise, with notable growth in exports of vehicles, cell phones, electronics, and increased imports of natural resources like petroleum and coal. Prime Minister Mishustin’s visit to China occurred just two months after President Vladimir Putin’s rare trip outside Russia to meet with President Xi. Despite criticisms from Western leaders, the strong bond between China and Russia remains resilient.
